Classifying the Animal Kingdom

The animal kingdom is divided into several broad categories, known as phyla, which group animals based on shared characteristics. For example, mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects are all distinct phyla. Within each phylum, animals are further categorized into classes, orders, families, and species, which reflect their evolutionary relationships.

Scientists use a system called taxonomy to organize animals and study their evolutionary history. This classification helps researchers understand the diversity of life on Earth and how different species are related. By grouping animals with similar characteristics, taxonomists can identify new species and trace their lineage through time.
