Pies R Us
In a pie-eating contest, Alice was neither first nor last, but she beat Evan. Ben beat Alice. Carol beat Dan and Ben. Who was last?

Either Evan or Dan were last but I can't tell which.

I agree Anita, there is not enough information on Dan to determine if he beat anybody.

By reading this it says Alice wasn't last so if u (me) put her in 2nd to last & she beat Evan
I would assume....that would put Evan last?

but she could also have been 3rd - the only one for sure that is able to be placed is carol in 1st place. Alice could be 3rd or 4th, Ben could be 2nd or 3rd, Dan could be anywhere from 2nd to 5th and Evan could be 4th or 5th - so I haven't a clue

I hadn't done this but I tried before I went back for the answer and did it like this
A is 2/3/4
b is 1/2/3
c is 1
e is 3/4/5
cross out the repeats and leaves d = 2 so e = 5
went and checked the answer and that is what it gave

How can you cross out the repeats and know which one to leave? What am I missing here? (apart from a brain).
The only way I could solve it was to assume Dan beat Ben. Listing all their possible positions based on the info given I could see Carol was 1st as nobody beat her:
A - 34
B - 23
C- 1
D - 2345
E - 345
I put Alice in 4th as she is beaten by Ben and I assumed Dan beat Ben as it says Ben beat Alice (but not Dan). This puts Dan in 2nd, Ben in 3rd and so Evan is 5th:
1- Carol
2 - Dan
3 - Ben
4 - Alice
5 - Evan
Interesting puzzle though Mo, got me thinking.
